Christmas Tree Decorations
from:The Christmas tree has long been a part of traditional Christmas celebrations. The tree is often thought to resemble the pagan symbol of the tree of life. In an attempt to make the evergreen trees more attractive people developed ornaments and decorations to brighten the festivities. Christmas tree decorations were developed to give the tree a more festive look at Christmas time. The first Christmas trees included apples as fertility symbols-they were also convenient because the apple is a fruit that keeps until winter in Northern European regions. Some people frowned on this idea because in Christianity, the apple was used in the devil’s temptation of Adam and Eve.
Common Christmas tree decorations include holly, poinsettias, mistletoe, swags, and wreaths. People also use ornaments that are specially designed for Christmas trees-these might include Santa Claus, angels, carolers, toy soldiers, etc. People may also hang holly and small paper lanterns from their tree.
Christmas tree decorations normally consist of lights, bows and artificial snow. Christmas tree lights are essential as they symbolize the light of the world. Christmas trees have to sparkle and glitter-shiny colored tinsel is used as a Christmas tree decoration and it also symbolises light. Strands of tinsel may be hung in groups from longer branches to look like icicles, but this trend seems to have gradually fallen since the late 1970’s. The shimmer and glitz used to be seen as way of remembering the rich wrappings of the presents brought by the wise men.
Ribbon is often used as Christmas tree decorations-these are often in the form of garlands. Ribbon is a versatile material that comes in both wide and narrow widths, as well as patterned or plain styles. Another great addition is to spray the tree with artificial snowflakes. Many people think that the artificial snow gives their tree a real Christmas feel.
In the United States, Christmas tree decorations once commonly included religious themes. However, this has led to many lawsuits, as some people say that it amounts to the government endorsing a religion. In 1984, the United States Supreme Court ruled that a city-owned Christmas display, even one with a Nativity scene, does not violate the First Amendment.
Although Christmas tree decorations, are considered secular in many parts of the world, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia bans these displays as symbols of Christianity. In the West however, Christmas trees, Christmas tree ornaments and Christmas tree decorations are not necessarily seen in religious terms. The Christmas tree has become a recognizable part of Christmas celebrations-it has nothing to do with the original message of Christmas.
