99. Making Christmas Costumes
from:It seems that every year the preparations for Christmas festivities begin earlier and earlier. Preparations for school and church nativity plays will often begin before the end of October. Children get really excited no matter how small a part they are called upon to play. Parents put a lot of time and effort into getting little Jimmy ready for his part as a shepherd, or to finding the right wings for little Jenny who is playing the angel. Making Christmas costumes has become a feature of many families preparations for Christmas. At Christmas time people get invited to lots of parties and quite often these parties will involve fancy dress. There is not always enough time or money to go out and buy something to wear-and anyway part of the party fun is in making Christmas costumes.
Making Christmas costumes need not be too arduous a task. Shepherd’s costumes are probably the easiest. Spare sheets are essential when it comes to making Christmas costumes and they can be utilized in a number of different ways. It just so happens that sheets sewn side to side with holes cut out for the head and arms are ideal garments for that period. People, both men and women in biblical times often wore very loose garments that were tied or belted around the middle. Sheets are very good for a shepherd, you can make the loose garment which they tie round the middle with a piece of rope. Tea towels make very good headdresses placed round the head with a band to hold them in place. An old walking stick or a large branch will serve as a shepherd’s crook and the costume is complete.
If you are making Christmas costumes for the bigger players like the Virgin Mary and Joseph; you can still use the same basic loose garment tied round the middle. Joseph can wear a headdress similar to the shepherds while Mary just needs a large scarf or a small piece of sheeting for her headdress. Even if you are making Christmas costumes for a wise man/king it is easy. Use the same basic garment again and just add a crown. The problems come if you have several children all starring in nativity plays because you may risk running out of sheets.
When it comes to making Christmas costumes for angels it is probably best to find or buy a dress. Then you can make a simple halo from a headband, some foil and some pipecleaners. Wings can be constructed either from cardboard that is then painted or from a wire frame that is attached to the garment.
