A Christmas Card: Your Family Coat Of Arms

from:

A Christmas card is like your family’s personal coat of arms. It extends the personality of the giver, is very colorful and ornate, and comes complete with motto for the upcoming Christmas season. In the past, a coat of arms was something handed down from father to son and was a source of great honor and pride. It proclaimed the family history and the achievements of that clan.

Similarly, a Christmas card today can contain the Christmas letter within. It usually relays the chronicles of that particular family throughout the previous year. Some wonderful ideas to include in this memoir of family adventures are memorable trips, recently discovered historic facts about the family, or even new additions like a baby or a pet. In addition, the card can be an expression of that family’s faith and beliefs.

Some families prefer to send out highly religious cards with images of Christ and spiritual themes. Others will send out cards that are geared towards receivers who might celebrate Christmas, but not as a religious holiday. These Christmas cards will say things like: “Season’s Greetings” instead of the better-known “Merry Christmas.” Either way, the choice of motto is highly personal and offers a family a way to express their own culture and beliefs in whatever manner they feel is appropriate.

A Christmas card today can be made with a variety of media, some even jingling pre-recorded tunes when you open them. It’s doubtful any medieval clans had that option for their coat of arms! It adds another level of uniqueness and, if your family is musical, one can obtain a voice-recording card that plays a message that is usually 10 seconds long. One can insert phone cards, as a subtle hint for those people you might not have heard from in a long time. Some even come with small blinking fiber optic lights, in the spirit of the season.

However, there will always be a place for the antique or old-fashioned Christmas card. Christmas is about a time of nostalgia and innocence for many people, and receiving a laced card or one created by children in the spirit of giving is particularly touching. Creating the cards can also be a family project and a time of togetherness complete with rubber stamps, foils, glue, and glitter.

Many families want that personal touch, but don’t have the time to do an old-fashioned Christmas card. Instead, they opt for the photograph card, which still makes it personal but without a lot of the work. The family can schedule a time to go to a professional photographer to get a family portrait done. These photographs are then inserted into stock Christmas frames and sent off.

No matter what choice a family makes for their Christmas card, it is always bound to be unique and expressive of their personality.
